A G6 boot that stops low can be remembering an opening limit. A boot that reverses can be reacting to resistance. Those are different problems: establish which one you have before changing settings or assuming a motor fault.
UK scope · checked 17 October 2026. The button procedure below is documented in the original G6 handbook linked by XPENG UK, printed pages 163–166 (PDF pages 164–167). This is not confirmation that every 2026 facelift or later XOS menu is identical. Match the handbook and controls supplied with your car. The clearance checks are our practical guidance.
First: make room for the whole moving lid
Park securely in P on a level, open space, with people, pets, luggage and overhead obstacles outside the lid’s movement. Keep an access key with you. A garage beam can hit the outer surface even when there is plenty of room beneath the latch. Do not copy an online measurement of the height under the opening and treat it as the highest point of the lid.
If you cannot open safely where you are, leave the boot closed and move the car to an open location first. Do not use your hand, head, a blanket or a ceiling as an anti-pinch test. The handbook describes reversal when an obstacle is detected; that is a protective response, not a way to measure clearance.
Set an opening height on the original UK G6
- Open the boot in the clear space. The handbook says the internal boot switch can pause movement.
- With the lid at the desired opening angle, press and hold its internal switch until you hear the confirmation sound. The handbook identifies this as the height-memory setting procedure.
- Close the boot normally with everyone clear. Reopen once in the same open space and check where it stops.
- Check both the highest outside point and whether the latch now sits at head height. A lower setting trades overhead clearance for a greater chance of walking into the lid.
The original handbook also lists Window & Door → Boot Unfolding Angle Memory on the centre display. Later wording may differ. It describes a minimum permitted setting: selecting below that limit stores the minimum value instead. A confirmation sound therefore does not prove that a very low garage clearance is achievable.
It opens low every time, but moves smoothly
Check the stored opening-angle setting first. In open space, follow the matching handbook to select a higher permitted angle, then close and reopen once. If the same low stopping point follows the setting, that supports a remembered limit rather than a random interruption. Check the setting again after another driver changes it; do not assume boot height is tied to a particular driver profile.
Before using a garage, compare the lid’s actual path with the ceiling, door mechanism, rear wall and any slope. A height saved on level ground is not a clearance guarantee on another surface. If clearance is marginal, keep the boot closed there.
It reverses, pauses unpredictably or will not latch
- Stop repeated cycling. From outside the movement area, look for an object, displaced load, trapped strap, visible ice or debris at the opening and latch. Remove only loose, safely accessible obstructions.
- If ice is present, allow it to thaw safely. Do not force a powered lid, chip around the seals or pour boiling water over it.
- Try one normal operation in clear space. The original handbook says the external switch operates the boot when the vehicle is unlocked; compare it with the internal switch rather than repeatedly sending app or voice commands.
- Note whether there is a confirmation sound, motor noise, a displayed warning, smooth partial movement or an uneven gap. These observations separate a command problem from resistance or latching trouble.
If it still reverses without a visible obstruction, sits unevenly, makes grinding noises or will not latch, stop cycling it. Do not adjust hinges, striker or powered struts, and do not use a battery disconnect as a reset. Do not drive with an unsecured lid. Arrange assistance with the actual symptom and a parked recording; if the lid is secure but inoperative, keep it closed until assessed.
What your test result tells you
- Internal and external switches work; only app/voice fails: basic lid movement works during that test. Investigate the command or connection separately; it is not proof that every boot component is fault-free.
- Always stops smoothly at the selected angle: review height memory before booking a mechanical repair.
- Reverses at different points or cannot latch: preserve the evidence and request a mechanical/electrical inspection rather than raising the limit.
- No boot response and other locks/screens are also dead: use the existing G6 low-voltage recovery guide. Do not attempt a boot calibration on an unresponsive vehicle.
Take a useful fault record
Record model/edition, XOS version, exact message, whether the car is unlocked and in P, the switch used, saved angle and the point of interruption. Film only while parked with a clear movement area. Keep registration, home location and account details out of public posts. Ask the repairer to reproduce the stated sequence and record the outcome, rather than simply requesting a “boot reset”.
Evidence and related help
XPENG UK owner documents link to the original UK G6 handbook, boot opening/closing and height memory. International owner discussions raised the distinction between latch clearance and the lid’s highest point; their dimensions and suggested garage workarounds are not UK specifications and are not used as instructions here.

Test the behaviour. Keep the evidence.
Applies to: Original UK G6 handbook, boot section pp163–166; a saved opening angle is not a garage-clearance guarantee.

Review is due. Recheck the primary source and your exact version before relying on changing details.
First useful check
In clear space while parked, compare the saved angle and one normal internal/external switch operation.
Read the result
A smooth repeatable stopping point supports checking height memory; varying reversals or latching trouble need the obstruction/fault route.
Stop or change approach: Stop repeated cycling for grinding, uneven gaps or failure to latch. Do not drive with an unsecured boot.
Prepare a useful record
XOS, saved angle, switch used, interruption point and any warning.

Evidence and answer standard
Documented checks; outcome depends on the test. The date records an evidence review, not a physical test of your car. A forum report can identify a question; it cannot establish a universal repair.
