Choose the correct figure
- Confirm the derivative on the order, registration or handover paperwork.
- Match it to Standard Range, Long Range or AWD Performance.
- Use that variant’s WLTP figure only for comparison.
- For journey planning, use the car’s recent consumption and allow a reserve rather than treating WLTP as an arrival prediction.
Build a useful real-world baseline
- Start with a known battery percentage and reset a trip meter while parked.
- Record distance, start and finish percentage, outside temperature and displayed consumption.
- Repeat on normal urban, motorway and mixed journeys.
- Create separate mild-weather and winter planning figures from repeated journeys.
What reduces usable range
Higher speed, low temperature, strong wind, heavy rain, heating, gradients, roof loads, tyre condition and payload can all increase energy use. Short cold journeys can look particularly inefficient because cabin and battery heating use a larger share of the trip’s energy.
When to seek support
One low journey does not prove battery degradation. Save comparable trip and charging data if battery percentage changes suddenly, warnings appear or repeated similar journeys show a major unexplained reduction. Never continue solely to test an estimate when the vehicle tells you to charge.
Turn the published figure into a journey number
The WLTP figure identifies the tested derivative; it is not a promise for a particular road. Before a longer journey, confirm the exact wheel size and derivative shown in the vehicle documents, then compare the car’s predicted range with a recent journey made at similar speed and temperature.
- Reset or note the trip distance and consumption before departure.
- Record starting and finishing battery percentage.
- Keep motorway speed, cabin heating and load representative of the journey you are planning.
- Use the observed result as a personal planning reference, while keeping an arrival reserve.
Useful handover: if the displayed estimate changes unexpectedly, record model, wheel size, XOS version, temperature, route, average speed, start and finish percentage. That evidence is more useful to support than “the range looks low”.
