Home charging should be treated as a small electrical-infrastructure project, not as a compatibility question. For an XPENG G6 owner, the useful decisions are the available supply capacity, chargepoint power, cable route, load management, tariff integration and the controls that will govern each charging session.
Specify the installation from the property, not the brochure
A competent installer should assess the consumer unit, earthing arrangement, main service fuse, existing high-load equipment and the route from the supply to the parking position. The survey should also establish whether dynamic load management is required to prevent the property exceeding its available supply.
Confirm the G6 derivative’s maximum AC input from the current UK specification or handbook. The vehicle controls the power it accepts: fitting a chargepoint with a higher headline rating does not make the car exceed its onboard AC limit.
Estimate charging time properly
A practical estimate is the energy required divided by the lower of the vehicle’s AC limit and the chargepoint’s usable output, with an allowance for charging losses. Calculate the energy needed to reach the chosen limit—not the full advertised battery capacity unless the vehicle is genuinely being charged from empty to full.
For example, adding 40 kWh at a sustained 7 kW takes a little under six hours before losses. Supply constraints, temperature, balancing and scheduled pauses can extend that time.
Choose the controls before choosing the hardware
- Load management: valuable where the property has an electric shower, heat pump, storage heating or other substantial loads.
- Tethered or untethered: a convenience and cable-management decision, not a charging-speed decision.
- Connectivity: check whether scheduling and energy reports continue to work if Wi-Fi or a cloud service is unavailable.
- Solar integration: confirm supported current thresholds and whether the system can blend solar generation with grid power.
- Access control: consider authentication if the chargepoint is reachable from a shared or public area.
UK smart-charging requirements
Private chargepoints sold for domestic or workplace use in Great Britain are subject to smart-chargepoint requirements covering functionality, supplier interoperability, safety, metering visibility and security. Tariff and schedule design
Compare tariffs using the whole household bill, not only the advertised overnight rate. A useful monthly charging estimate is energy delivered in kWh multiplied by the applicable pence-per-kWh rate, with standing charges and any peak-rate changes assessed separately.
Choose one primary scheduler—the vehicle or the chargepoint—unless the two systems are known to coordinate. Conflicting schedules are a common reason for a connected car failing to charge when expected. After configuration, run a short observed session and then verify an unattended overnight session.
Commissioning record
Keep the installer’s certification, chargepoint model and serial number, circuit details, warranty information and app account recovery method. Record the normal charging power shown by the vehicle and chargepoint; that baseline makes later diagnosis faster.
If a scheduled session fails
- Check the vehicle’s charge limit and departure schedule.
- Check the chargepoint schedule, access control and network state.
- Confirm the connector is fully latched and inspect for a warning.
- Try a short immediate session to separate a hardware fault from a scheduling conflict.
- If the fault persists, save timestamps and error messages for the installer or XPENG support.
Professional boundary: do not use an extension lead or modify a domestic electrical installation to improvise EV charging. Installation, inspection and repair belong with a suitably qualified professional.
